At the Moment #4

Hi guys! How are you? I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend and that you’ve been reading some lovely books! Uncharacteristically for me I’m actually reading more than one book right now, so I thought I’d do another At the Moment post. These are some of my favorite posts to write, cause I get to talk about all the fun stuff I’m enjoying right now and I get to hear about the fun stuff you’re enjoying as well. So that’s a win-win for me!

…I’m reading: Pride by Ibi Zoboi

My “main read” right now is Pride by Ibi Zoboi, a modern remix of Pride & Prejudice set in Bushwick, with a Haitian-Dominican heroine. I’m on page 121 and I’m really enjoying it so far. I love the main character’s big, loud, loving family and her equally loud neighborhood! Zoboi’s books always have such a strong sense of place and I love that.

I’m also reading a collection of fairytale retellings: Vasilisa the Wise and Other Tales of Brave Young Women by Kate Forsyth and Lorena Carrington. Each story’s been selected for it’s resourceful  female protagonist and I just love reading about badass girls slaying their own dragons. Metaphorically, I mean. No actual dragons have been harmed so far.

…I’m watching: Loving Vincent

I finally watched Loving Vincent and it was wonderful. So moving and completely visually stunning. It was filmed with live actors, then converted into swirling oil paintings in the style of Van Gogh by a team of 125 artists and the result is, as you can imagine, a unique piece of cinematic artwork.

…I’m listening to: Moominvalley in November by Tove Jansson.

Do you remember the Moomins? I adored these odd little creatures as a child, and my love for them’s only grown bigger and deeper. So I was delighted to find all the audiobooks on Spotify, and even more so when I realized they’re read by Tove Jansson herself! I’m currently listening to Moominvalley in November and it’s a lovely, nostalgic autumn read.

What have you been reading, watching and listening to lately? Do you usually read multiple books or stick to one at a time? And if you’ve read a good book about Van Gogh, please let me know!

  1. Pride!! I loved Zoboi’s American Street, and I know this is going to be a very different book, but I hope it’s just as good.
I’m not reading anything currently, I just finished The Phoenix Empress (it wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be, the first book is better), and I plan to read another tome soon.

    1. I loved American Street too! It’s very different, but it’s got some of the same themes like neighborhoods, community and family.
It’s always so disappointing when the sequel doesn’t live up to the first book. I hope your next tome is better! 😊

  2. Oh my God, the books that you’re reading look so interesting!! I just added them to my TBR and can’t wait to start reading them 🙂 If you like fairytale retellings with female protagonists you should definitely read Tangleweed and Brine by Deirdre Sullivan. (Although you might have already) L.

    1. I’m glad you found something to add to your TBR, I hope you enjoy reading them 😊 Fairytale retellings are my favorite things, but haven’t read Tangleweed and Brine yet. It sounds amazing and the cover is so pretty. Thank you so much for the recommendation!

  3. I’m reading Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series, which is really funny. I’ve been watching the DC superhero TV shows in order, which is one massive adventure but fun.
