My Mom Picks My OWLs TBR

capture-20180529-1755098.pngHi guys! So you might have already heard about the OWL Readathon back in April when it was actually happening – but I didn’t. (If you didn’t either you can check out the announcement video here or read the announcement letter here.) Since the NEWTs are taking place in August and I really want to participate, I decided to do the OWLs in July! To get a passing grade you have to sit two OWLS (aka finish two books). I’m planning on reading 8 books, but since I’m terrible at deciding what to read I made my mom pick my TBR for me! She’s a big reader too, but not as big an SFF-reader as me, so it’ll be really interesting to see what books she picks.

Ancient Runes: Read a book with a symbol on the cover

Mom’s pick: Bruja Born by Zoraida Córdova

Mom: You love witches.
Me: I do.
Mom: And the other one’s a bit boring.

Astronomy: Read a sci-fi novel

Mom’s pick: Empire by Michael R. Hicks

Mom: There’s blue aliens in it. Like Avatar.
Me: Brilliant input.

LiveUntriedAmericanpainthorse-size_restricted.gifCare of Magical Creatures – A book that includes magical creatures (on the cover counts)

Mom’s pick: To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

Mom: I know you really want me to pick To Kill a Kingdom.
Me: You can pick whatever you want, I want to read all the books.
Me: I really want you to pick To Kill a Kingdom

Charms –  Read a fantasy book

Mom’s pick: Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames

Mom: The guys on the cover look cool. And broad-shouldered. Isn’t that your thing?

Divination – Read a book featuring prophecies

Mom’s pick: The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton

Mom: This is hard. This one’s really good, but the other one’s good too. But this one’s so beautifully written. But the other one’s got a circus.
Me: You’re starting to sound like me.

Herbology –  Read a book with a nature related word in the title

Mom’s pick: The Book of Pearl by Timothée de Fombelle

Mom: The title’s beautiful. And it’s French.
Me: I’d say that’s shallow, but…
Mom: …that’s why you bought it.

History of Magic – Read a historical fiction novel

Mom’s pick: Daughters of Castle Deverill by Santa Montefiore

Mom: I want you to read it, so you can tell me if it’s any good.
Me: Every time you buy a series, I have to read them first.
Mom: And you’ve found some amazing books that way, so don’t complain.

Transfiguration – Read a bok that deals with transfiguration/ shapeshiting

Mom’s picks: Secrets of Selkie Bay by Shelley Moore Thomas

Mom: It’s reminds of that animated movie we watched, Song of the Sea
Me: That’s why I bought it
Mom: But that was so long ago. Why haven’t you read it?
Me: You’re not supposed to ask me that…

That went so much faster than when I pick my own TBR. And I now have a super exciting TBR to look forward too, so thank you mama! Let’s talk! Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them? Did you take your OWLs in April? Are you planning on taking your NEWTS in August?

  1. I saw this title and clicked on the post immediately, that’s how you get readers, congrats

I was having so much trouble with the symbol one because I just couldn’t figure out what counts as a symbol. What’s the symbol on Ember in the Ashes, for example?

I disagree with your mom, The Loneliest Girl in the Universe looks more interesting 😛 But I’ll agree to disagree.

    Your mom sounds awesome!

I’m very excited for the OWLs 😀 I’m taking them in July as well like you, then NEWTs in August.

    1. Hahaha, thank you! I should’ve thought to use my mom as clickbait sooner 😂

Oops, my bad! I have the Norwegian edition of Ember in the Ashes and there’s a little fist inside a flame over the title on that one, I honestly didn’t notice it was on the English cover. I had a hard time finding a book for that one too.

Yeah, she is 💕 She says: Thank you!

I’m super excited too! We can be readathon buddies 😊

      1. Oooh, makes sense. The one I finally picked is a 25-page short story but it has little weapon symbols on it.

yeah! 😀 I want to complete all 12 OWLs, but for the NEWTs I’m not sure how many I’ll get done…

      2. I thought about trying to complete all 12, but I don’t want to big a TBR, cause I still want to be able to pick something up on a whim and I’m reading some big ones! I’m not sure how many I’ll do for the NEWTs either, 3 or 4 maybe 😊

  2. Oomg this is the cutest post ever! I love the interactions between you and your mom lol. I think I might join you and make July and O.W.L. month since I completely failed it the last time. 😅

    1. Thank you so much! 💕 My mom reads some fantasy (she loves Laini Taylor), but she really doesn’t like sci-fi (she likes Avatar and Star Wars though, so I might win her over to the dark side). You should – it was so fun. Awesome, I’m super excited to read it! 😊
